Dell Zinio HD, Mini/Media Center Desktop, Now Available For Order

zino-hd-order_dellI’m a BIG fan of Windows Media Center desktops. 3 or 4 years ago, it was a major pain to set up a home network and distribute movies or music across the house to a Media Center PC and Large Screen display. The folks at Engadget just came across the Dell Zinio HD mini form-factor PC for sale over at Dell.com.

Today, setting up a Media Center PC is a piece of cake. Just get a Wireless-N router and hook it up to your main home computer. With a USB adapter and a small form-factor PC in your living room you can now easily enjoy movies in large screen goodness (depending on how good you are with Torrent Services). The Zinio HD seems to fit the bill. Featuring AMD Athlon Processors, 4GB of memory, discrete ATI graphics card and a 500GB hard drive, this seems to be a great, tiny system with the horsepower to crank out 720p video.

Dell to Face Backlash in US Over Factory Closures?

When Dell brought in Mike Cannon as its head of operations, it was pretty clear; In order to reduce expense overhead, Dell would be shutting down much of its in-house manufacturing operations and shifting production to contract manufacturing. Dell’s expense structure was bloated and needed to trim down in order to compete with HP and Acer who have utilized this practice for years.

However, there may be a large backlash forming against the company who has, over the years, focused a majority of its sales focus in the United States and other western countries.

Many of these now-closed production centers (Texas, Tennesee, North Carolina, Ireland) have caused controversy in those localities. Jobs lost have been lost (for good?) and voters are left scratching their heads on why Dell received government incentives to bring these factories in the first place.

Will this affect Dell’s ability to sell to consumers and companies in these affeted areas? More so, could this negative brand impact grow beyond across the US and Europe? Check our articles like this, from a local North Carolina TV Station (WRAL): “Dell is turning its back on the U.S. – Just say no to Dell”.

In this current economic climate, you want to make all the friends you can. There’s a chance that consumers will rally around “Made in the USA products” in response to the negative ramifications of globalism. Dell and other US companies better find a way to respond to this.

Dell’s “Future Proof” Desktops = Old Technology + New Catch Phrase

Dell announced today their latest update to their Small Business focused ‘Vostro’ line of Desktop systems.

Dell has added a new feature to the Vostro 430 which they call “Future Proof”(sic). Their press release details the ability to “add memory”, “PCI/PCIe cards” and additional hard disks.

Revolutionary? Not really. I’m probably not saying anything you didn’t know, but most desktops allow easy access to the motherboard and drive bays to allow for these changes by either users and/or service representatives.

In this day and age of “sustainability” and “environmental responsibility”, I’m surprised that the Dell leadership isn’t positioning the ability to upgrade as a way to fight back against critics who suggest that the PC industry fosters waste and unnecessary replacement of electronic products.

Instead of searching for the latest ‘catch phrase’, perhaps Dell and the PC industry should focus on how this increases the working life of a computer PC?

Makes sense to me. Of course, thanks to the industry, users can’t upgrade the system processor so these upgrades won’t make a big impact on lowering the total cost of ownership for SMB’s.

Want a big, honking Desktop? Dell’s Studio XPS

Dell Studio XPS Desktops

Dell Studio XPS Desktops

I’m sort of surprised – I thought that between affordable/powerful  notebooks and the new generation of All-in-one desktops, folks wouldn’t have the need for a big, honking desktop that evokes images of the Original IBM PC.

Guess I’m wrong – seems that the gaming set still likes a big box with a state-of-the art Intel processor (Core i5 and Core i7), room to add hard drives (ever hear of external USB?), and a mega graphics setup.
