Dell, HP Customers Upset With Windows 7 Delays
Computerworld reports that Dell & HP customers are angry due to delays in the shipping of Windows 7 media as promised under the Windows 7 Upgrade Option program. The program is supposed to ship replacement media to customers on or about October 22nd, the date of the Windows 7 launch. Customers are being notified that their orders are on backorder and could take many more weeks.
The Upgrade Option Program is designed to help PC manufacturers address possible slowdowns in sales due to the introduction of a new Microsoft Operating system. Introduced with the launch of Windows XP and replicated for Vista and Windows 7, consumers are able to purchase a PC within some number of months of the Operating System launch and receive the free (or discounted) upgrade to Windows 7.

Dell Zinio HD, Mini/Media Center Desktop, Now Available For Order
I’m a BIG fan of Windows Media Center desktops. 3 or 4 years ago, it was a major pain to set up a home network and distribute movies or music across the house to a Media Center PC and Large Screen display. The folks at Engadget just came across the Dell Zinio HD mini form-factor PC for sale over at Dell.com.
Today, setting up a Media Center PC is a piece of cake. Just get a Wireless-N router and hook it up to your main home computer. With a USB adapter and a small form-factor PC in your living room you can now easily enjoy movies in large screen goodness (depending on how good you are with Torrent Services). The Zinio HD seems to fit the bill. Featuring AMD Athlon Processors, 4GB of memory, discrete ATI graphics card and a 500GB hard drive, this seems to be a great, tiny system with the horsepower to crank out 720p video.

Dell Caught Up in NY State Anti-trust Case with Intel
Dell attempts to clean up its PR image after its recent cost cutting measures and factory closings has hit another hurdle. NY State Attorney General, Andrew Cuomo, filed a federal lawsuit against Intel, similar to the one that was recently decided in the European Union, that alleges that Intel aboused its monopoly power by paying computer manufacturers to use its chips over its competitor, AMD.

Good Read: Notebooks shedding DVD drives
Sharing is caring! How about this article – AP reports on many of the changes in the notebook world – in order to lower weight and improve battery consumption, they are omitting DVD drives.
This is fine in a world where your applications and media are downloaded or can be loaded via flash. However, I think this is an instance of the industry being a bit hasty and an opportunity for backlash. Many applications, including Microsoft Office, still install applications via CD or DVD media. Also, movies are still in disc form and last time I checked, none of the major studios were all warm and fuzzy about users ripping films to their computers.
The cost-cutters and retailers out there will suggest that users just go and buy a USB DVD drive to augment their system. A quick search found this to cost around $50-70 depending on brand. An OK idea, but if you’re a frequent traveler, that “thin and light” notebook is not so thin and light when you have to truck around a heavy power cable and NOW a DVD drive in the briefcase.
Hopefully, cooler heads will prevail.

Confirmed: Sprint IS Offering Dell Mini10
As predicted here at DellObserver.com, Sprint announced today that it is selling the Dell Mini10 with Integrated 3G broadband.
Sprint will make the netbook available for $199 after a $100 mail-in rebate. According to their website, that’s not all. Subscribers are required to sign up for a 2 year subscription with a monthly fee of either $59.99 for a limit of 5GB of bandwidth or $69.99 for unlimited monthly bandwidth.
For reference, Sprint’s EV-DO Rev. A network “provides customers with expected average upload speeds of 350-500 kbps and download speeds of between 600 kbps and 1.4 mbps. Peak download data rates increase to 3.1 Mbps (from 2.4 Mbps), and peak upload data rates increase to 1.8 Mbps (from 153 kbps).”
